I’ve been following The Jewel of Medina dust-up on NPR and Smart Bitches, and I’m saddened. And sort of hopeful. If you’re not familiar (you can review here), Jewel is a historical novel about a religious figure’s wife. Some people thought it shouldn’t be published because it might be offensive to some other people, while other people yet thought the second other people should just refrain from reading it and let still other people think for themselves.
I’m aghast and uncomprehending how people can launch fiction into violence, and yet I’m awed and gratified that story has that power.
How are you using your power for good, my friends?
